‘Sun Dog’ Lights Up The Sky Over The Chicago Area « CBS Chicago

CHICAGO (CBS) – WBBM listeners have reported seeing the atmospheric phenomenon “Sun Dog” throughout the day in northern Illinois.
National Weather Service Meteorologist Matt Friedlein says the Sun Dog seen today in northern Illinois was caused by a specific cloud formation and ice crystals refracting the sunlight, which created a halo with two bright spots
“Ice crystals just above the surface today led to the refracting of the sunlight and so you can get these sun dogs and they were brighter than normal today because we had a high amount of ice crystals,” said Friedlein.
